Its official. The combination of rock star Bob Dylan and Irish artist William Mulhall is the most irresistible and lusted after double act in the Irish Art World.
This was proved this morning (26/11/02)
at 3 am on 51c Dawson Street, Dublin 2
when art thieves involved in a ram raid on Apollo Gallery ignored works of art by
Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood and Louis Le Brocquy worth hundreds of thousands of euros and instead targeted a portrait from life of Bob Dylan by top Irish Painter William Mulhall.
We cant believe it, said a representative of the gallery. The thieves ignored 100,000.00 Euros worth of paintings by Louis Le Brocquy and instead took the portrait by Mulhall which is painted onto a handmade plate, created by top ceramicist Tim Goodman, that was sitting beside them in the window. Whatever else we find out about the thieves, we do know that they are major fans of Uncle Bob. The portrait is incredibly heavy and is 24 inches in diameter so it took a lot of effort to simply pick it up. The thieves must have wanted it very much. As Bob Dylan sang on, HEART OF MINE, If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. I guess these guys were prepared to do the time for this work of art.
William Mulhall is one of the worlds top portrait artists, having painted both Nobel Prize Winner Seamus Heaney and Bob Dylan from life. Recently, his portrait of Bono was signed by the singer himself as a testament
to Mulhalls genius.
